National Potato Chip Day 2013

So it’s time to lather up in salt and grease, because at the Foster City Library on this auspicious day, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., we will taste and vote for your favorite potato chips.

This Spud's No Joke

It is hard to believe that the world's most famous snack food began as a joke. Potato chips were first made in 1853 while Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt was on vacation in New York. At one restaurant, he kept sending his fried potatoes back to the kitchen because he said they were "too thick." The chef, George Crum, decided that he would cut them into paper-thin slices, boil them in oil, fry them, and salt them as a joke to the Commodore. It backfired. They became an instant success and the restaurant was well known for them.

Flavors Galore

Since then, the potato chip revolution has exploded with flavors such as Lincolnshire sausage and brown sauce, sour cream and spring onion, and Birmingham chicken balti from across the pond; Cajun herb and spice, chile limon, chipotle ranch, classic BLT, dill pickle, garden tomato and basil, sweet southern heat barbecue, tangy Carolina, Parmesan and Tuscan herb, southwestern ranch, creamy Mediterranean herb, spice rubbed BBQ, Maui onion, jalapeno, mesquite BBQ and spicy cayenne and cheese created right here in the U.S. by Lay’s; Blastin' Buffalo Wing, Screamin' Dill Pickle, Ragin' Cajun, and Sizzlin' Sweet BBQ are all chip flavors offered by Pringles, and even a line of sea-inspired flavors from Route 11 in Virginia including Chesapeake Crab Potato Chips ... Wow! Who knew!
