Summer Reads: New Books of Interest

There's so much out there to read. This month we recommend trying one of the titles below.

The Human Body

God's Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine by Victoria Sweet. I have been looking forward to reading this book since I heard the author speak on NPR. She mentioned our current attempt to "fix" everything that is wrong with the human body, as if we are a car and can replace parts and how much she learned by working with patients who can't be "fixed".

Deliciously Paris

Paris, My Sweet: A Year in the City of Light (and Dark Chocolate) by Amy Thomas.

It's about two of my favorite topics: Paris, and sweets! What's not to like?

On the Cutting-Edge of Science

The Best American Science Writing 2011, edited by Rebecca Skloot and Floyd Skloot. Commitment is low with a collection, there's a good chance you'll learn something useful, and this year the work includes the essay "Gut bacteria in Japanese people borrowed sushi-digesting gene from ocean bacteria." How can that not be interesting?

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. For those who want to know what it's like to spend a summer hiking a thousand miles through the Sierra Nevada and Cascades, but don't want to actually do the hiking.
