You Are Invited!
This year our One Book One Community selection is Packing for Mars by Mary Roach. Everyone in San Mateo County is invited to hear Mary Roach speak on Thursday October 13th at 7:00PM. The event is in a new location: the Fox Theatre at 2215 Broadway St in downtown Redwood City.
Mary Roach will discuss her book Packing for Mars which is about the curious science of living in a completely hostile and unnatural environment. The essayist Beth Lisick will interview her and then she will take questions from the audience.
So, why Packing for Mars? When science and humor intersect, science becomes interesting and Mary Roach finds the coolest people to interview. "This completely awesome book's awesomeness is so awesomely awesome that it's difficult to get across just how awesome it is. It's a fun, intelligent, and engrossing read, something that a dude can get excited about.” - Douglas Lord, libraryjournal.com
Jon Stewart is more succinct: "Hilarious."
Also, some of us remember the space race, the first walk on the moon, the original Star Trek series, The Hitchkiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 2001: A Space Oddessy, and of course Star Wars. Space exploration is exciting and dangerous and sometimes requires very tedious experimentation by dedicated scientists. Mary Roach honors the history of space exploration and looks to the future, when someday we'll have manned trips beyond Mars.
Besides the main event, all the libraries in the Peninsula Library System are offering events around the theme of astronomy or space exploration. Packing for Mars is this month's choice for most of the book clubs. Find out more at the San Mateo One Book One Community website or our Facebook page.
Cynthia R's favorite space show was Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (and yeah, most 10 year olds have better taste). Princess Ardala had the coolest costumes.
