Filoli Estate, Hidden Treasures of San Mateo County
I couldn’t let the Hidden Treasures series go without mentioning the Filoli Estate. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is an historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and stewardship of its cultural traditions and natural history for public education and enjoyment.
A Rare California Country Estate
Considered one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century, it was designed by Willis Polk and noted for its elegant interiors. The House is an interpretive museum exhibit for an extensive collection of 17th and 18th century English antiques. Filoli welcomes the public to its 654-acre property, including the 36,000 square foot Georgian country house and spectacular 16-acre English Renaissance garden.
Tour It When You Can
Tours of the House and Garden are available mid-February through the end of October. Filoli's Visitor and Education Center is available to rent for business-related meetings. Open to visitors Tuesday, February 9th through Sunday, October 24th, 2010 with the exception of closed days that are listed on their website.
Holiday Traditions 2010--“Visions of Sugarplums Dancing”
- Friday, November 26th through Saturday, December 4th
Each year Filoli holds their annual Holiday Traditions event. This year's theme, "Visions of Sugarplums Dancing," is inspired by cherished stories, songs and dance of holidays past. The nine-day event begins with their Premiere Access Shopping Evening where you may shop the Holiday Boutique, with a wide range of unique holiday gifts, while enjoying piano melodies, white wine, and hors d’oeuvres. Their Evening Dinner Party is an elegant dining event with live music and dancing in the Ballroom, or you can simply relax in Filoli's charming setting while enjoying a buffet lunch or bistro dining. To review the schedule of events and purchase tickets, visit the Filoli Special Events page.
