Compulsive Reading

Comedy Favorite

Boy, was I thrilled when I finally got my hands on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Season 7. This season featured several humorous storylines, including the Seinfeld reunion and Larry’s attempts to get Cheryl back.

One of the extremely talented and funny people on the show is Jeff Garlin, who plays Larry David’s best friend and manager. I get a kick out of his storylines on the show, so it was a pleasant surprise to come across a book he authored on the Half Moon Bay Library’s New Nonfiction shelf.

My Footprint: Carrying the Weight of the World by Jeff GarlinUnusual Concept, But It Works

Garlin’s book My Footprint: Carrying the Weight of the World is, in a nutshell: a humorous memoir that tackles the serious topic of compulsive overeating and the quest to reduce one’s carbon footprint. Sounds like a totally weird combination, I know. But once I picked it up, I ripped right through it.

Food for Thought

Like Larry on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Garlin says a lot of things that many people may think and feel but wouldn’t say aloud, much less commit to paper for posterity. Written in a journal style, it’s very honest about sensitive topics. His battle with food addiction is particularly compelling. He makes many valid attempts to eat moderately and healthfully, only to constantly revert to bad habits (ADD and depression sometimes trigger these downfalls). It’s painful to read at times, but his conversational writing style and ability to make the reader laugh makes it a pageturner. Days after finishing it, I’m still thinking about it and recommending it to people.
