The Reach Out and Read (ROR) program takes place throughout San Mateo at multiple medical clinics serving low income or at risk children. This program, based on the national model, has been very successful at not only introducing new families to the library, but also teaching parents how to read and share books with young children. At many sites, we recruit volunteers to read to the children in the waiting rooms which helps parents see how much their children love being read to. Using the ROR model, doctors and other medical providers talk to parents about the importance of reading and going to the library, give age appropriate guidance on how to share books, and give a brand-new book to help build the home library. Prior to receiving ROR services, many parents were unaware of the critical importance of reading to babies and very young children and often these are the only books the families have at home.
