Be San Mateo County’s Poet Laureate

 

“I am the maker, the lover, and the keeper. . . .”

The quotation above is a line (or verse) from a poem by Jane Kenyon called “Briefly It Enters, and Briefly Speaks” (Source: Poets.org). I thought it summed up the qualities of a poet as someone who creates, loves, and preserves the art of poetry and writing. And speaking of poetry…

Wanted: Poet Laureate
Nominate Someone to be the San Mateo County Poet LaureateSan Mateo County is looking for its own Poet Laureate. This honorary position will last for two years and begins in October 2013. Among the qualifications for Poet Laureate, you must be:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Have lived in San Mateo County for at least three years
  • Been published or recognized for your poetry or other writing

If chosen, you will get to write a poem about the county or its surroundings and travel around the area doing public readings, giving workshops, and attending civic events to help increase awareness of poetry, literature, and the arts among the public. At each San Mateo County Board of Supervisors quarterly meeting, you will also get to begin the meeting by reading a poem.

The final deadline for nominations is Wednesday, July 31st at 5:00 p.m.
