When I was in college, I spent a month living in Paris for a summer study abroad program. I had brought a few books with me, but I quickly ran out of reading material. I wandered into Shakespeare and Company and fell in love with the store. I spent hours wandering around the store while I was in Paris, browsing their crowded shelves and buying used books from the shelves outdoors. I even attended an author event, held on the top floor in a tiny nook with standing room only.
The store has a fascinating history, which is discussed in these books:
- Time was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare and Co. by Jeremy Mercer
- Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation: A History of Literary Paris in the Twenties and Thirties by Noel Riley Fitch
- Shakespeare and Company by Sylvia Beach
The bookstore makes an appearance in a novel as well as two movies!
Stephanie C loves all things Parisian. She highly recommends reading A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway and stopping in Shakespeare and Company if you are ever in Paris.
