I bought a paper the other day and discovered that BART now has posters featuring famous Bay Area novels: The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, and The Call of the Wild by Jack London.
The artist is Owen Smith, who has been featured on many New Yorker covers, illustrated some children’s books, and done an album cover for Aimee Mann. He also did the cover art for Maureen Dowd’s book, Are Men Necessary?: When Sexes Collide. Smith is in the process of doing mosaics for the newly renovated Laguna Honda Hospital in the City.
On the posters, BART riders are shown reading the novels. Want to check out a book to read on the train? The Millbrae BART station has an automated library book lending machine called the Free2Read & Ride machine.
