Ponder Pissarro’s People Promptly!

Photo of Camille Pissarro. On Saturday, December 3 at 2 PM, Atherton Library invites a Legion of Honor art docent to present a slideshow and lecture on French Impressionist, Camille Pissarro. Belmont Library will host the same program on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 PM. Both programs are featured on the Events carousel of the San Mateo County Library website.

Why a Docent Program Fosters Art Appreciation

Woodside Library previewed this absorbing program early in November, and our small library attracted a crowd of 30 people eager to view the works currently on display at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor. If you are interested in the exhibit, act quickly! The works are borrowed from collections worldwide and the exhibit will only be open until January 22, 2012.

I popped into the San Francisco venue the day after the library program. Still clear in my mind was the docent’s suggestion to view Pissarro’s oil painting of a maid, and then turn to the opposite wall to see an actual black-and-white, poster-sized photograph of the real maid. I also knew the heartbreaking story of a much-loved daughter’s early death; thus, her portraits, so affectionately brushed in, evoked poignant memories.
