Get Your Walk On!

Stairway Walks in San Francisco by Adah BakalinskyWalk Your Way Through One of the Best Cities in the World

One of the best books I’ve discovered at the library is Stairway Walks in San Francisco by Adah Bakalinsky with Marian Gregoire. To check out the book, and get started on your own adventures, click on the title above.

I, along with my family or walking group, have completed 6 of the 27 walks outlined in the book. The walks are a fabulous way to see a different side of San Francisco, beside the usual touristy-type of things to do. It is also an awesome workout!

Check Out the Wild Parrots

One of my favorite walks is the Telegraph Hill & North Beach walk (#2 in the book). It takes you through the habitat of the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. The The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill DVD by Judy Irving is fun to watch before or after your walk.

The Telegraph Hill walk also takes you to Coit Tower, and the hidden parks and bay lookouts in the surrounding neighborhood.

Neighborhood Spirit at Its Finest

My other favorite walk (which I have done 4 times--it’s that good!) is #11 in the book. The walk takes you through the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood. The first staircase you’ll ascend is a work of art. It has a colorful mosaic-tiled staircase that pictures cannot do justice. Tiled Steps is the neighborhood group that created and maintains the staircase.

Lattes and a Walk

I’ve also taken the Forest Hill/Pacheco Stairway walk (#15). I went with my walking group, and we ended our walk with a latte in nearby West Portal. The perfect end to a scenic walk with great company.

I highly recommend the Stairway Walks in San Francisco book. Now get out there and get your walk on!
