Hello There Gorgeous!

Bad hair dayBlemishes, Dark Circles, and Frizzies. Oh My!

I’m one of the unlucky people in the world who does not have perfect skin or hair. It took me years to figure out how to tame my frizzy, slightly curly/wavy hair, shape my eyebrows into submission, and find makeup that conceals but doesn’t make me look like a clown. Unless you’re one of the lucky few who has perfect skin and hair and a real eye for color, then you know what I’m talking about.

Wow Them Now!

There are so many firsts that come along in our lives. The first date, meeting the parents, first job or day on the job, first day in college, and so many more. For so many of these firsts, you want to make sure that you look and feel amazing. Not because I think that beauty is only skin deep, but because I believe that first impressions always last. If you can wow them with your amazing smile during that first meeting, imagine how far you will go when they get to know you.

Having said that, let’s get to the good stuff.

Hmmm, What to Buy, What to Buy . . .

Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me by Paula Begoun

This is the 8th edition of this heavy yet resourceful book about makeup and skin care products written by this long time skin-care maven. Inside you will find reviews of products from the less expensive drugstore to the über pricey department store. If it feels a little overwhelming because of the size, flip to the back where she breaks it down to the best of everything—mascara, cleansers, powders, etc.

InStyle: Getting Gorgeous by the Editors of InStyle Magazine

Okay: so now that you’ve got the information about the products, let’s talk about what you actually should use. This book is broken up into the different beauty areas and provides information on what you need for your skin and hair type. You will also find information on the best hair styles/ colors and eyebrow shapes that will compliment your face. Unfortunately, not everyone can rock a heavy bang.

Taming Your Tresses

Curl Talk: Everything You Need to Know to Love and Care for your Curly, Kinky, Wavy, or Frizzy Hair by Ouidad with Jennifer Schonbrunn Hinkle

This book has been my life saver!!! Ouidad (pronounced Wee-dahd) is the curly hair guru in the hair industry. She’s been on many reality make-over shows to help women figure out how to tame their tresses. She has certainly helped me. For example, I learned that I should never, never, never, twist my hair into a towel turban when I get out of the shower. Instead, I need to blot dry to help the curls come out and eliminate frizz.

To Laser or Not to Laser

Beautiful Skin of Color: A Comprehensive Guide to Asian, Olive, and Dark Skin by Jeanine Downie, M.D and Fran Cook-Bolden, M.D.

There are certain challenges that women of color have to battle when it comes to skin care. For example, dark circles under the eyes. It can be caused by heredity or allergies or a combination of both. Whatever the reason, it isn’t fun. This book is great because it provides you with information about certain conditions as well as over the counter, prescription, procedural (like lasers), or home remedies. Did you know that cool moist tea bags under your eyes can help with dark circles? It’s worth checking out, isn’t it?

Author Bio:

Rebecca A is a librarian who thinks that the dark circles under her eyes make her look tired and not mysterious despite her friends' assurances.
