The Perfect Antidote to the Economy--The Library!

piggy bankMuch has been written in the last year of the effect on libraries of the down economy. People come to us for all kinds of practical reasons, the most pressing of which are job searching, writing resumes, applying for jobs online, and a host of other job-related activities.

But the library can offer so much more that will help take your mind off things and assert a little balance in your life.

When Did You Last Visit a Modern Library?

Have you checked out the DVD collections? Investigate the latest movies, documentaries, travel guides, TV series, and biographies that are here at your fingertips.

Want to Listen to Music?

Your favorite artist is here and so are those artists you always wanted to listen to but didn't want to buy, at least not until you heard their stuff.

If you want to take your family to a night out at the movies, attend one of our Family Movie Nights! It's all here and it costs you nothing out of pocket.

We can save you literally hundreds of dollars on entertainment offerings in many formats, whatever meets your needs or your whims.

Why Pay Twice for Something You Can Get Free at Your Library?

We like to say that the library is free but in reality it is not. Out costs are what you would expect: staff, collections, equipment, programs. You have already paid for these things through your property taxes so in essence they are now free to you because you've already paid for them.

Come into your local library today to pick up your books, CDs, DVDs--because they are in fact yours. We choose them, manage them, loan them, and repair them (if needed) but they are first and foremost yours. Our job is to get you the best stuff out there and make it as available and accessible as possible to the most number of people we reasonably can.

Enjoy

So the best antidote to a bad economy is a good library and we at the San Mateo County Library are dedicated to making it the best library you could want!

Author Bio:

Thom Ball has worked in libraries for over 20 years, first managing the PLS Video Center, where he was in charge of the operation including collection development of the video collection, then as a Branch Manager in the San Mateo County Library system as manager of the Atherton, Portola Valley, and Woodside Libraries. Thom has been the manager of the Pacifica Libraries for the past 4 years. Before working in libraries he was a professional musician playing throughout California and the Midwest. Thom still does a Musical Storytime at the libraries to keep his chops up. There are few things more rewarding than playing music, reading stories, and being goofy for a bunch of little kids.
