BEGINNING
READERS
for Kindergarten & 1st Grade |
| San Mateo County Libraries
have special sections labeled JE that have books with patterned
and controlled vocabulary for beginning readers from kindergarten
through about second grade. Staff can help you find other reading
materials in varied formats including CD ROMS, videos, and book/
cassette combinations . This list is designed for those who are
just learning how to read. It includes some of the picture book
titles from our JP sections that also work well as early readers.
We have indicated types of books to look for when you are choosing
titles that will suit your early reader’s particular learning
style and level. Try a variety of titles, be patient and most
of all, have fun as your child enters this exciting new world
of reading! |
| ALPHABET,
ACTIVITY, AND CONCEPT BOOKS |
| Children begin developing
the skills they need to learn to read by learning that written
words have specific meanings and that letters represent sounds. |

| Look for topics and words that
are familiar to your children. Books should have very few
words, lots of repetition and the pictures should give
children clues about the words. These are books you might
want to read aloud to your child but they may soon memorize
and learn to recognize the words themselves. |

BOOKS |
| These are the simplest books intended for young
children to learn to read on their own. They have very few words
and these are repeated often. Sentence patterns are also quite
predictable. |

| BEGINNING
READERS |
| Beginning readers
have more words on a page and have more involved stories.
They are suited for the young reader who has gained confidence,
knows how to read many two and three letter words and is
already comfortable with many primers. |
| Many are part
of the I
CAN READ series. |
