1. Watch
Out! Big Bro’s Coming by Jez Alborough
All the animals in the jungle are terrified when a little mouse tells them
that Big Bro is coming. A funny book with big colorful illustrations of
different animals. I recommend anything by this author.
2. Bark
George by Jules Feiffer
George’s mother is dismayed when her puppy seems to do anything but
bark. Lots of great animal sounds, and a sly sense of humor make this one
of my all-time favorite read-alouds.
3. The
Baby Beebee Bird by Diane Redfield Massie
The animals at the zoo are all upset when the new bird won’t be quiet.
Kids love chiming in on the “beebee bobbis.”
4. How
Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? by Jane Yolen and
Mark Teague
Large humorous illustrations, and rhyming text make this a perfect bedtime
book for your little dinosaurs.
5. The
Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry
Bear by Don and Audrey Wood
The little mouse needs to hide his enormous strawberry from the approaching
bear, but how? Fantastic illustrations add to the fun in this delightful
trickster tale.
6. What!
Cried Granny: An Almost Bedtime Story by Kate
Lum
Granny wants Patrick to go to sleep, but first he needs a bed, a blanket,
a pillow, and more. Kids love guessing what will happen next in this funny
tale featuring the world’s most industrious grandmother.
7. The
Lion and the Little Red Bird by
Elisa Kleven
A bird wonders why Lion’s tail changes color every morning. Beautiful
collage illustrations bring this charming story to life.
8. I
Love You, Blue Kangaroo by Emma Chichester Clark
Blue Kangaroo is Lily’s favorite stuffed animal, but what will happen
when her relatives give her a whole bunch of new toys. A wonderful, sweet
story about a common childhood dilemma.
9. Oonga
Boonga by Frieda Wishinsky
Nobody can stop Baby Louise from crying until her brother Daniel finds
the magic words. Kids love repeating the “Oonga Boonga” line.
10. Dear
Bear by Joanna Harrison
Katie can’t stop worrying about the bear who lives under the stairs
until her mother suggests that she write him a letter. Kids facing fears
of their own will appreciate Katie’s situation.
