San Mateo County’s Second Annual One Book, One Community

Daughter of Fortune book cover Our first community read, launched last autumn with The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, received wide participation from our residents. Encouraged by their enthusiasm, we’ve organized another riveting literary program that runs from September 23rd through November 7th. This year we chose Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende because the themes of the novel--immigration, cultural diversity, and California history--are so relevant to our community and have provided the inspiration for many exceptional programs.

Peninsula libraries have invited exemplary speakers and performers, scheduled provocative films, and organized Chilean food, music, and art functions-all designed to extend the themes of Daughter of Fortune. Don’t miss these thought-provoking, entertaining events, free and open to all! We know that you’ll enjoy the experience. For more information please go to http://www.plsinfo.org/OBOC.

She went on to become a celebrated columnist and editorial director for Pacific News Service, the San Francisco Chronicle, and KGO-TV. A book signing will follow Ms. Castillo Guilbault’s presentation.

San Mateo County Library’s Newest Library on the Horizon

The foundation has been poured for the new Portola Valley Public Library! In the works for several years, the library will be part of a new Portola Valley Town Center complex that will include a Town Hall and Community Building. The San Mateo County Library System is looking forward to opening the doors of this expanded library sometime in summer 2008. Nearly doubling in size to more than 6,000 square feet, the new library will feature a Learning Center, a larger collection, additional computers, dedicated space for children and families, comfortable reading areas for adults, and beautiful views of the Portola Valley hills and redwoods.

To watch the progress of this exciting project, visit the webcam that the Town of Portola Valley has posted on their website: http://portolavalley.net/webcam/pvtc_project.shtml. The library is the building to the right on the screen. Thanks to the town of Portola Valley and its many volunteers for funding and fundraising for the new library and Town Center, all of the community donors who have contributed, and the San Mateo County Library staff who have worked on the project!

Back to school at the Library – Homework Centers at SMCL Libraries

Our Libraries are "learning places" in more ways than one. However, one of the most significant trends is the in-library Homework Center.
  • The East Palo Alto Library's Quest Learning Center is a free literacy-based after school program for 3rd-12th graders that helps students master the subject matter in their classes while developing positive attitudes towards learning and libraries.
  • The Millbrae Library Homework Center is open 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Staff and volunteers are able to assist students with most academic subjects. Four computers and a printer are available for homework research and writing assigned papers.
  • The Belmont Library Homework Center has a tutor/supervisor available to students, grades 3-12, from 3-6, Mondays through Thursdays, complete with computers as well. During the summer 2007, the Belmont Library successfully launched their first summer enrichment program, DREAMS, during the month of July. Students, grades 3-5, were encouraged to participate throughout the school year via the Children's Newsletter and the Homework Center. The program was arranged into 4 separate themed weeks, starting off with Math, followed by Reading, then Music/Art, and ending the program with Science. Each week's curriculum was prepared and organized by staff utilizing the California Standard of Education, so that each day's lesson and activity was designed appropriately for students entering grades 3-5. Class size accommodated 20-25 students per week.
Other branches, including Foster City and Pacifica also have active homework centers. In addition, our libraries subscribe to Free Online Homework Help at www.smcl.org/features/LiveHomeworkHelp.html where students can get live professional tutoring help, and Ask Now at www.asknow.org where students can talk live to a Librarian to get research and other assistance at any time, day or night. See both websites for more information.
