Chitra Divakaruni, the acclaimed author of The Mistress of Spices and The Palace of Illusions, will appear with KALW public radio's New America Now Host Sandip Roy. Roy will explore with Divakaruni the characters, themes and storylines of The Mistress of Spices. Q & A to follow as well as book sales and signings.

San Mateo County Library presents Lawyers in the Library

Each month the library, in partnership with the San Mateo County Bar Association, holds free legal clinics. Find out more and schedule a one-on-one twenty minute consultation with a volunteer lawyer at your local library. Each evening at each library has a scheduled focus--topics include family law, wills and trusts, guardianship, general topics, real estate, and more. Sign up at a participating library today! In November, this program will be expanding to East Palo Alto and Half Moon Bay.

Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer-Prize winning author of Kavalier and Clay will appear in conversation with San Francisco Chronicle book editor John McMurtrie. A wine and cheese reception will precede the event at 6:30 pm. Both the reception and program are free and open to all.

This event is being cosponsored by M is for Mystery Bookstore and the Friends of the Belmont Library. Copies of the book may be purchased for signing or with a receipt from M is for Mystery.

Baby Sign Language Introductory Workshop
Monday, September 14, 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon
Jump-start your child's verbal skills! Stop guessing what your baby is trying to tell you. Baby Sign Language gives parents the opportunity to communicate with children long before babies can verbalize their wants and needs. This workshop introduces basic baby signs that are based on American Sign Language (ASL) and is designed for parents with hearing babies who range in age from birth to 18 months old. You will learn about the latest research and all the tricks on how to teach your baby to sign. Fun activities and songs will show you how easy it can be to integrate simple signs into your everyday routine to jump-start your child's verbal skills. Space is limited. Alexander Kugushev offers a largely optimistic outlook on the resilient and adaptive nature of this country. By observing the actual behaviors of Americans, he will dispute much of the prevailing pessimism among many native-born. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing.

Start your Halloween celebrate at the library!  Come for a Halloween storytime, and then do some simple crafts.  At 2 pm, see Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King (not rated; 75 minutes) on our big screen.  The amazing Krudsky uses his carnival tricks to steal the light magic from Princess Fairy Willow. It is up to Scooby-Doo and Shaggy to stop him or everyone will be turned into horrible Halloween monsters.

FOSTER CITY LIBRARY CLOSURE: October 4 - January 4
An interior redesign project has been developed to improve the library experience for the hundreds of people who visit the library each day. The library will close at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The library will re-open on Monday, January 4, 2010.

Book borrowing during the closure
Foster City items checked out after September 12, 2009, will not be due until after the library re-opens in January 2010. Items can be returned to ANY library in San Mateo County prior to January if you do not wish to keep the items for the full three months.

PLEASE NOTE: The book drop here at the Foster City Library will NOT be available during the closure.

Adult Non-Fiction Book Discussion Club

Please join us, at your convenience, either for the afternoon or evening group, as we discuss Charles Darwin's "The Voyage of the Beagle".  This richly readable book is the product of Charles Darwin's amazing journey aboard the Beagle where he made observations that led to his revolutionary theory of natural selection.

The Medieval Tournament

Ancient Artifacts will choreograph "combat" between three “Knights” clad in chainmail, helmets and other battle gear from different periods of the era. These visiting “Knights” will offer an explanation of the medieval arms race. This 45-minute presentation is for ages 8 and up, but all ages are welcome!  Please join us for what will surely be an exciting program!
