The festivities for "One Book, One Community: San Mateo County Reads Daughter of Fortune commenced on Sunday, September 23rd with a packed audience at the Historic School House, Portola Valley Town Center. The incomparable, folk-music duo Chaskinakuy captivated all ages with their selection of Chilean mountain music played on traditional instruments. Their sound was at times cheerful, rousing the audience to clap to their beat, and at times other-worldly, inspiring quiet appreciation. The audience and the musicians shared traditional Chilean cookies, Alfajores, during the reception that followed. |
The month of October is packed with equally fine programs, free and open to all! All programs were designed to extend the themes of Daughter of Fortune. Please peruse the list of events and visit your local library for a complete printed program or find a complete calendar of events online at www.plsinfo.org/oboc.

San Mateo County Libraries along with all the members of Peninsula Library System are participating in a Pilot Project to test a new online catalog, WorldCat Local. Have you tried it? OCLC, a global library cooperative, created WorldCat Local from the larger WorldCat, a database of over 1 billion library holdings worldwide, available on the web at www.worldcat.org. The catalog features a single search box familiar to those who frequently seek information on the web. The purpose of the pilot is to test and improve the public catalog to insure that it is useful to people searching for works in their local libraries as well as those searching for unique items that are hard to find. Many suggestions have already been received but more are welcome. Our libraries are the first public libraries in the nation to participate in this project making it possible for you to be the first to influence the future of library catalog searching.
