Holiday Cooking - Book Recommendations

Are you tired of candied sweet potatoes and cranberry salad making appearances at all of your holiday meals? Maybe you want to create a new family tradition, or perhaps, this year, a family member has special dietary concerns. Whatever your holiday food needs, the library has the materials to help you create a successful and memorable holiday meal.

Use the library’s catalog to search for “holiday cookery,” “Thanksgiving cookery,” “Christmas cookery,” “Jewish cookery,” or “seasonal cookery,” and you will find a multitude of helpful materials.

If you’re looking for global inspiration or recipes to make with children, try Holiday Cooking Around the World as well as Christmas Cooking Around the World by Susan Purdy.

If you are serving a family member or friend with special dietary needs, such as a vegetarian, you could use Vegetarian for All Seasons by Pamela Sheldon Johns, Moosewood Restaurant Celebrates by the Moosewood Collective or Deborah Madison’s timeless cookbook Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. If you are making desserts for a diabetic for the first time, don’t forget to check out Big Book of Diabetic Desserts published by the American Diabetes Association.

If you just need some extra inspiration this year—something to put a little zip into your holidays—you might try Sara Perry’s Holiday Baking: New and Traditional Recipes for Wintertime Holidays, Feast: Food That Celebrates Life by Nigella Lawson, Joan Nathan's Jewish Holiday Cookbook by Joan Nathan, or Paula Deen Celebrates! Best Dishes and Best Wishes for the Best Times in Your Life by Paula Deen.

This is just a small sampling of holiday cookbooks, you’ll find more recipes in books, magazines and dvds at your local library.
