Welcome to the Newsletter!

Welcome to the first issue of San Mateo County Library’s eNewsletter! This monthly newsletter comes out at the beginning of each month and advertises the events, classes, and other news for the upcoming month for all twelve of the San Mateo County Library branches. We will also include brief stories about resources, features, and news that apply to all of the libraries.

If you haven't yet, you can subscribe in two ways:
  • by e-mail using the form on our eNewsletter webpage, smcl.org/newsletter/
  • by RSS using our RSS feed. Add the feed to your news reader and you’ll be alerted each time a new issue comes out. If RSS is new to you and you want to learn more, then you might want to watch RSS in Plain English, a short video explaining this exciting technology.
We will work hard to earn your readership, as we know that you have precious few hours in the day. This newsletter will give you the information you need about your library and the services it can provide you with. If you’d like to give us feedback on the newsletter, just email us at smcl@smcl.org (we’ll include this address at the bottom of each newsletter). Enjoy!

Keeping Track of What You've Read

We've all had that sudden thought: "What was that book I read about the neanderthals and the time travel thing...?" Well, when you get your books (or DVD, or CDs, etc.) through the library, we can keep track for you!

My Reading History will help you track every item you have checked out from the library. Only you can turn it on, and only you can see what you have checked out by logging into your Library Account with your library card number and PIN. Library staff can not see your reading history.

My Reading History feature in the PLS catalog

To turn on My Reading History:
  1. Log into Your Library Account at: http://www.plsinfo.org/
  2. Click on My Reading History
  3. Click on the Opt In link
  4. From this point forward, anything you check out will show up in your Reading History.

To see My Reading History after you have turned it on and checked out items:
  1. Log in to your Library Account
  2. Click on My Reading History
  3. A list of items you have checked out will appear.
  4. You can delete certain items if you want to.
This information will be kept until you turn it off, which you can do by clicking on Opt Out.

Enjoy your new list of all the items you've checked out--you'll never be left wondering again what book that was that had flying kittens!

Pay Fines and Fees Online

We recently introduced a new service that allows you to pay your fines and fees online. You can pay any fine or fee in your library account online. There is no minimum charge and Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

To pay online, first log in to your Library Account. Then click on the link labeled unpaid fines and bills on the left side of the screen. The next screen will show a complete list of all the fines/fees on your account. Simply click on the Pay Online button to pay online!

For more information about paying online, check out the Pay Online FAQ.

If you need a reminder of what the various fines and fees are for late items, holds, and more, you can see the Fees and Fines list.

Homework Resources, Free Magazines, and More Online

With a San Mateo County Library card, you'll find magazine and newspaper articles, biographies, homework resources, health information, and more--all on our eBranch website, smcl.org.

You cannot find this information through search engines. The Library subscribes to these resources so you don’t have to! Here are just a few of our dozens of resources:

  2. Full Text Newspapers: articles from the San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, etc.
  3. Health and Wellness Resource Center: health and medical information
