Get Ready for Some Football!
It is a great time of year because it is football season! It is good to see the National Football League was able to avoid a lockout, but like most fans, it was a frustrating time. So why not return to a time when the players were only concerned about the love for the game: high school football. Football in general is a great source for stories of courage, teamwork, leadership, and inspiration.
One of the best stories about football is Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights is unique because it started as a book, and then it was made into a movie, and finally it was made in to a successful television series. The great thing about everything under the Friday Night Lights name is that the book, movie, and television series are all excellent and worth checking out!
Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team and A Dream is a 1990 non-fiction book written by H.G. Bissinger. He follows the 1988 Permian High School Panthers located in Odessa, Texas. The book is an examination of a pressure-filled season spent with Coach Gary Gaines, his players, their families, and the town, all held together by their connection with the local high school football team.
Friday Night Lights, the movie, is a faithful adaptation of the book and stars Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, and Derek Luke. Like the book, it examines the 1988 season as the Permian High School Panthers try to make a run for the state championship. It also examines the political and social issues--such as racism, poverty, and segregation--that existed in the town of Odessa.
With the success of the book and the movie, Friday Night Lights was made into a television series that just concluded after 5 critically-acclaimed seasons. The television series follows the fictional East Dillon Panthers led by Coach Eric Taylor and has garnered 2010 Emmy nominations for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.
Friday Night Lights, the book, the movie, and the television series, are all winners!
