Evie’s British Invasion
A few days ago a young man asked where he could find items on the British invasion. He was looking for music by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. Bands that immediately came to my mind were Duran Duran, The Smiths, and The Stone Roses--they were my British invasion.
The British Are Coming
Back in the early ‘80s while most of my friends were into hip-hop, I was experiencing my first true obsession…Duran Duran!!! My favorite member was Nick Rhodes but I digress. I was immediately drawn to their music, unlike anything I had heard before. Strange lyrics, stranger clothes, they even wore make-up! They were considered pioneers in their use of the music video. To get a nice overview of their musical offerings, try their Singles box set available at SMCL.
It wasn’t all about the glam though, I was also a big fan of other British greats. The Smiths were another early favorite. The combination of Morrissey’s lyrics and Johnny Marr on guitar made for some of the finest indie pop ever produced: listen to Hang the DJ.
The first time I heard The Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored” I just about lost my mind. Speaking of losing my mind, I can’t talk about Brit bands without mentioning the Verve. Early on, the Verve had a heavy psychedelic spacey sound: take a listen to “Slide Away” from their This Is Music compilation.
I am only scratching the surface here. I haven’t even brought up my love for Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, The Clash…the list goes on and on!
It’s Not Over…
The invasion continues with bands such as Radiohead, Doves, Arctic Monkeys to mention a few. Take a peek at Radiohead performing “House of Cards".
I can’t tell you what this song does to me…it’s too personal!
Evie D. is currently going through her stash of ‘45s looking for that Duran Duran poster sleeve to put back on her wall.
