90 Minute Writers: A Creative Writing Workshop
Notes from Class
Our first meeting was very encouraging and much appreciation goes out to the aspiring writers who came in and spent the evening with us.
After introductions and writing goals were shared, the group participated in a writing exercise known as "I am a camera".
All of our writing exercises are inspired by writing guide-books available at the library. Group members are encouraged to check out copies, use the advice, and keep up with their writing practice throughout the week.
Featured Title This Week
- The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing by Alice LaPlante
If you are an aspiring writer and unable to join the workshop, you can check this blog series to get advice and participate in some of the writing exercises we will be using. Although that's the easy part! It will be up to you to put aside distractions and focus on your writing practice!
There is a few more spaces available for anyone who is interested in the benefits of group feedback. Please visit the Brisbane Library and add your name on the sign-up sheet.
The next meeting will take place on
- Tuesday September 21st from 6 PM - 8 PM at the Brisbane Library.
Josephine Villegas, a volunteer with the Brisbane library, has coordinated this workshop as a way for the library to reach out to the writing community while also giving herself one less excuse for not working on her novel. Using her experience as a bookseller along with her enthusiasm for the creative writing process, she hopes that the participants will be able to leave each class with renewed inspiration and a new library book to keep them motivated! The workshop is open to writers of all levels: emphasis will be on exercises and discussions about breaking through writer’s block, rediscovering the writer’s voice, and over coming the anxiety that prevents the writer from submitting work for publication.
