U.S. Matrix Construction crews have been busy deconstructing and rebuilding the interior of the San Carlos Library over the summer. San Carlos Parks and Recreation Director, Christine Boland, reports that they have completed well over 40% of their task. A member of the library staff has been documenting their progress by taking weekly photographs of the interior. See the current set here.
The Library is Still Open!
Meanwhile, our temporary mini-library on the second floor has been busy. We circulated over 12,000 items in June, despite having most of the library collection in storage (for the sake of comparison, the library circulates 40,000 items a month; 12,000 is what the library circulated in the old Chestnut Street location in the 1990’s, with a full collection). The staff and volunteers at the mini-library are continuing to present many adult and youth programs, and report good attendance figures. Check here for upcoming event information.
During our reconstruction period, the Friends of the San Carlos Library are continuing to hold their monthly book sales the third Sunday of every month. The Friends’ fundraising efforts help to pay for the library redesign. Future book sales and monetary contributions to the library will help replace furniture once we have reopened. The full-service San Mateo County Library Bookmobile visits the library on the same Sundays as the Friends book sales.
We are aiming to reopen the finished library on or around November 1, 2013. The improvements you’ll see include a special space for teens, a one-point service desk, zones for quieter reading and study, an inviting area of attractive displays of new books, film and music, clustered public computers, and an expanded Children’s Room with toddler appropriate computers, a creative play and learning space, and a colorful, fresh ambiance.
We will continue to post progress reports on www.smcl.org, as well as the San Carlos Library Facebook page. All library staff members and volunteers look forward to returning to full-service in our new space in autumn.
