I love the Muppets. I love everything about the Muppets – They’re puppets! They sing! They’re goofy! They have silly voices! As is the case with many superfans, I face the upcoming new Muppets movie with both excitement and trepidation. Don’t mess it up, Jason Segel!!!

Muppets: New and Old

I am really excited about a new cover album, Muppets: The Green Album (Check it out on NPR’s First Listen right now and read the nice accompanying article). I love Andrew Bird’s cover of Being Green – watch our catalog for the CD to come in.

The original Muppet Show (We’ve got several best of compilations as well as full seasons on DVD) is half time machine back to the late 70s/early 80s and half family-friendly variety show. I re-watched a season not long ago and I think it maintains its appeal for children as well as nostalgic adults. While the puppets don’t seem dated, the guests sometimes do, but, luckily, they’re really just accessories for Kermit, Piggy and Gonzo.

Muppet Relatives

There are multiple, multiple Muppet movies from 1979’s The Muppet Movie to those that started going straight to DVD, like The Muppets Wizard of Oz. If you have been, or have had, a child under five in the last 40 years, you are extremely familiar with the more successful Henson siblings (Sesame Street and Elmo’s World are well represented in the Library’s DVD collection). There are also the fantasy Henson cousins, like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, which are quirky, fun and awesome for older kids, teens and adults – neither the fantasy nor the puppets seem very out of date (unlike, say, the CGI in Jurassic Park…), but some of David Bowie’s music is very synthesizer-heavy...

Whatever. I still love it.
