Information about book sales and donations at San Mateo County Libraries:
Donations are accepted some of the time, depending on available storage space. Books should be in good condition, not outdated. Audio-visual items accepted, no magazines.
Books are sold during library open hours. For more information contact the Atherton Library.
The Friends of the Belmont Library do accept donations. Small donations may be dropped off at the library. Large donations need to be inspected by Adele Carney. Adele may be contacted at 650.593.5650. The following will not be accepted for donation:
- Damaged or soiled books
- VHS tapes
- CDs or DVDs without cases and/or covers
- Out-of-date textbooks
- Out-of-date computer books
- Out-of-date encyclopedias
The Friends of the Belmont Library operate a small bookstore that is open the same hours as the library. In addition, they produce 2 very large weekend book sales a year, usually in December and May.
Donations are accepted, with occasional moratoriums due to lack of storage space. The only items that are not accepted are magazines, textbooks, out of date travel or computer books (more than 2 years old), items with obvious damage (water, mold, mildew, broken spines, pages missing or falling out, etc).

The Friends of the Foster City Library sell books during library open hours.
The Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library accept donations of high quality hardbacks and paperbacks. Donations can be brought to the Accounts Desk when the library is open.
The Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library sell hardbacks for $3 and paperbacks for $1 from a book cart in the Library. For more information contact the Half Moon Bay Library.
The Millbrae Library is pleased to accept the following types of materials in good condition:
- Hardcover and paperback books
- CD’s, DVD’s, Cassettes, and Videos
However, due to limits in storage and disposal space, and the potential for damage to the library’s collection, the library cannot accept the materials listed below:
- Materials which have been stored in a garage
- Books with an accumulation of dust or cobwebs
- Books with yellow or torn pages or water damage
- Books which have been highlighted or marked with pen or pencil
- Musty material smelling of mildew (try the sniff test)
- Reader’s Digest Condensed books
- Textbooks and out-of-date computer books
- Encyclopedias more than 10 years old
Donations which meet the guidelines of acceptability may be brought to the Accounts Desk. Please do not leave books outside of the library or place donations in the book return. If you have a large donation (3 boxes or more), please call ahead to make an appointment 650.697.7607.
The Friends of the Millbrae Library Book Store is located inside the Millbrae Library and is open during regular library hours. The Book Store offers a wide selection of children’s and adult books and A/V media. There are two large book sales each year that take place in the library meeting rooms. Throughout the year there are outdoor bargain book sales, including a $5 Bag of Books sale. For specific dates and times please contact Judi Sullivan at 650.697.7607.
The Pacifica Libraries generally do not accept book donations except for current bestsellers/paperbacks in good condition. The Pacifica Friends of the Library accept donations of books in good condition and of general interest throughout the year. The Friends cannot take magazines, textbooks, or materials in poor condition (mold, excessive use, dirty, torn). Contacts: Caroline Barba, 650.359.3848 or Donna Scott, 650.359.9664.
The Pacifica Friends of the Library have two large books sales per year, typically in late November/early December and again in late May/early June on a Friday-Saturday. The Friends also operate an ongoing sale in their Book Nook at the Pacifica - Sharp Park Library which is accessible during library open hours.
Friends of the Portola Valley Library have an ongoing book sale located in the Friends of the Library alcove. The Friends also host larger book sales periodically throughout the year.The only items that are not accepted are magazines, textbooks, out of date travel or computer books (more than 2 years old), items with obvious damage (water, mold, mildew, broken spines, pages missing or falling out, etc). The Friends of the San Carlos Library Bookstore on the first floor of the San Carlos Library is open during library open hours.
The Friends of the San Carlos Library host a book sale on the third Sunday of every month from 1 - 4 PM in their offices on the second floor. Contact Helene for more information at 650.592.2517.
Friends of the Woodside Library host an ongoing book sale located in the front of the Library. The Friends also host a large biannual book sale in the Spring and Fall.
