Annual Poetry Contest Reception/Reading

The Poetry Reading and Reception will be held at the Town Community Hall for the Annual Portola Valley Poetry Contest. The contest is open to all Kindergarten through 12th grade children enrolled in a Portola Valley School, as well as Portola Valley resident children who attend schools elsewhere. Submissions will be accepted until May 1 at 5pm and materials have been distributed to local area schools. Applications are also available in the library. The Poetry Contest and Reception are generously funded by the Friends of the Portola Valley Library.

Combining singing, dancing, reading, and playing, Baby Bounce and Rhyme is a great way to connect with your young child. Using babies’ unique ways of learning about the world, we will explore familiar nursery rhymes as well as some new ones. There will also be a variety of board books available so that parents or caretakers can read to their baby.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Treat your stuffed animal or doll to a fun sleepover at the library! Stuffed animals should be dropped off by 6pm on Thursday, June 20th and picked up the next day. We will take pictures of your stuffed animal playing, reading, sleeping, and having fun with their friends at the library and turn the photos into a fun slideshow to share.

Speak Underground Open Mic Night

“Speak Underground” is our Teen Open Mic Night. The best part is that it is organized and designed solely for teens, by teens. All teens up to the age of 19 are welcome to participate or just attend. It is an “anything goes” type of atmosphere, where all performances and creative art is welcome: music, bands, art exhibition, dance, spoken word, theater, poetry, and generally anything artistic that comes to mind!

Calvin Keys Trio

Busy Bee Dogs

Busy Bee Dogs will present Trick Dog Act, a show that has been called a one-ring dog circus with over 45 different tricks and stunts! Watch in amazement as the individual personalities of the dog stars comes to life. Smiles, laughter, wild cheering, and silly comedy are common during each performance. Maybe you will be selected as a volunteer, but watch out as it can't be called a Trick Dog show unless the tricks are on you! For all ages.

Paws for Tales

Children can improve their reading skills by reading to a trained therapy dog. Sign up in advance and join the fun.

Have a reluctant reader? Studies show children who are reluctant to read in front of peers are much less anxious with an animal present. Children don't perceive animals to be judgmental; mere animal presence helps them become more confident readers. Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers are from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA’s Paws for Tales program.
