Johannes Vermeer’s enigmatic Girl with a Pearl Earring has intrigued art lovers for centuries, and is currently on exhibition at the de Young Fine Arts Museum. While the exhibition covers many artists of Vermeer’s time, this lecture will zero in on Vermeer, the specialist of domestic interior scenes of Dutch middle-class life in the 17th Century. Lead docent, Kay Payne will reveal little known facts to construct a nuanced portrait of the man as well as the artist.
