Description: Children can improve their reading skills by reading to a trained therapy dog. Sign up in advance and join the fun. Have a reluctant reader? Studies show children who are reluctant to read in front of peers are much less anxious with an animal present. Children don't perceive animals to be judgmental; mere animal presence helps them become more confident readers. Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers are from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA’s Paws for Tales program.

Baby Sign Language Class

Description: Baby Sign Language gives children the opportunity to communicate long before they can verbalize their wants and needs. Research studies show that signing with babies accelerates language acquisition, reduces frustration, enhances a child's self esteem, and deepens the bond between parent and child. This workshop introduces more than 20 signs that are based on American Sign Language (ASL). It is designed for expectant parents and parents with babies ranging in age from birth to 18 months.

Dig It: Digital Short Movie Project for Teens Workshop (Editing)

Description: This program will be a three part workshop (one per week) and by the end the teens will have a completed movie to submit to the SMCL Teen Film Festival. This week you'll be learning how to edit your film and you begin to complete your movie! The workshops will be taught by local film professor, Neil Corbin. Bring your own movie equipment or rent equipment from the Belmont Library to use! Teen and guardian must sign liability form before renting out equipment (available at the front desk). Ages 12-19.
