Day of the Children/Day of the Books: Tortilla Making

Friday, 04/24/15 at 4:00 pm
Wednesday, 04/29/15 at 3:00 pm

Description: Let's get ready for El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) April 30th by making (and eating!) tortillas. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, a tortilla is a "round, thin, flat bread of Mexico made from unleavened cornmeal or, less commonly, wheat flour. Traditionally the corn (maize) for tortillas was boiled with unslaked lime to soften the kernels and loosen the hulls. The grains were ground on a stone saddle quern, or metate. The tortilla was then baked on a comal, a griddle of earthenware or iron."
