Youth Literacy Project

Youth Literacy ProjectFunded by a grant from the State Library, San Mateo County Library’s (SMCL) Youth Literacy Project began in October of 2008 and serves teen mothers, ages 16-24, in two high need communities in the county, Half Moon Bay and East Palo Alto. The program aims to increase parental awareness about the importance of integrating literacy-rich activities into their daily routines with their children in order to promote healthy childhood development. To accomplish this, one staff member from SMCL’s adult literacy program offers monthly workshops off-site at two partner agencies that currently provide services to the teen moms (New Creations Home Ministries in East Palo Alto and Coastside Mental Health in Half Moon Bay). Workshop topics include: how to share books, oral storytelling, your home as a learning place, and rhythm, rhymes and songs. The workshops are designed to support the parent as their child’s first and most influential teacher.
