What do you wear to a Hindu wedding? What kind of present should you give when you’re invited to a Bat or Bar Mitzvah? Are you supposed to take off your shoes when you enter a mosque, and where do you put them? If these questions and more have ever arisen for you in our religiously diverse county, then get a hold of this book from the San Mateo County Library:
- How to Be a Perfect Stranger: The Essential Religious Etiquette Handbook, edited by edited by Stuart M. Matlins & Arthur J. Magida. It’s really helped me out more than once, believe me.
Not going to a Hindu wedding? Then watch Monsoon Wedding, directed by Mira Nair, with Lillete Dubey, Naseeruddin Shah, Shefali Shetty, Vijay Raaz. The music by Mychael Danna is great too.
Not invited to a Bar Mitzvah? You’ll want to see Praying with Lior, about a boy with Down syndrome, with Lior Liebling and Mordecai Liebling.
I can’t believe I just found this series from the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation): Little Mosque on the Prairie. I’d never even heard of it. Here’s a link to the complete first season. Let me know what you think!
