Judging a Book by Its Cover

You Or Someone Like You : A Novel by Chandler BurrThey say that you should never judge a book by its cover. The idea is true for books and for life in general, but that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with judging the quality of a book’s cover.

Allison Saltzman

Check out this interesting interview with designer Allison Saltzman, where she explains some of her design choices and the compromises she is forced to make. Saltzman states, "Yes, bookstore buyers (and our in-house sales force that works with them) have a tremendous amount of clout, because their opinions are backed up by numbers. Anyone can say, 'I don’t like the colour green,' or 'That woman looks too serious,' but if someone says 'Green is off-putting and that woman is depressing. I will take only 300 copies of your book instead of the 3,000 I’d originally intended,' then you have to start revising whether you agree or not." (Caustic Cover Critic, 4/26/2011)

Saltzman has designed the covers for quite a few popular titles, including The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: A Novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring, You Or Someone Like You: A Novel, The Family Fang: A Novel, Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s Eye View of the World, John Lennon: The Life, and Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books.
