Here Are a Few Tips
Unshelved
comic writers Gene Ambaum and Bill Barnes have a list of tips to help you observe proper etiquette while in the library, which is (after all) a public place. They suggest a few things like:
- Put the phone away.
- Listen to the librarian.
- Know what you want before you ask for it.
- Librarians are nice, but don't push it!
- What happens in the library, stays in the library.
- You can use the library from home, or any other non library location.
- Don't wait until the last minute.
While some of these suggestions may sound familiar, there is no substitute for the friendly attitude of San Mateo County Library staff (especially not in a comic strip).
Give and Get
Also, from November 15th through December 30th, something rather similar to this Unshelved comic becomes true: the San Mateo County Libraries and the Redwood City Libraries will waive overdue fines and hold fees if you bring in a non-perishable, unexpired food item for the Second Harvest Food Banks. The program is called Food for Fines.
"Master, What Must I Do To Get Into the Kingdom of the Library?"
Don't think you're off the hook if you follow the above tips. There is more.
Much, much more. For instance, your spawn must remain below a certain decible level, contingent on the acoustics of that particular building.
Also, if you try to put a book back on the shelf yourself, and you just place it atop the other books on the shelf, be prepared for a library employee to jump out of nowhere and whack you on the knuckles with a yardstick.
Beware!
