In view of recent events it seems quite fitting that April has been designated as Earthquake Preparedness Month. It's no suprise that our libraries are well supplied with historical accounts of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
Great Accounts of the 1906 Quake
Two of the best are Simon Winchester's (of course) A Crack in the Edge of the World and Philip L. Fradkin's The Great Earthquake and Firestorms of 1906.
Preparation Guides
To aid in preparedness a couple of good resources are Living with Earthquakes in California: A Survivor's Guide and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Disaster Preparedness.
Behind Canned Food
We are once again reminded to keep a 72 hour supply of food and water in a handy location including everyone's favorite canned good. See Spam: A Biography.
Mobile Emergency Alerts
One of the handiest things you can have on your computer, phone, or other electronic device is SMC Alert. It was quite helpful during the recent tsunami warning.
