Camp Nano

Camp NANOWRIMONo, it's not November yet. But the writing and creativity doesn't stop there! Welcome to Camp Nano -- short for Camp National Novel Writing Month. What is NaNoWriMo in the first place, you ask? Well, it's a challenge you take upon yourself to write 50,000 words in the month of November: only 1,666 words a day or about two pages single-spaced.

Camp Nano was created for those who are too busy in the holiday-filled month of November. Usually camp takes place in the summer months. This year, however, the writing extravaganza has been moved up to April! Yes, next month.

It's Too Soon!

I don't have any ideas! I don't have the time! I don't have it in me! What could I possibly write about for 50,000 words?

The answer to all this is, of course, yes you do and everyone has a book in them waiting to come out, whether it is fiction, non-fiction, or short story in format. Write an office-drama based on the trials and tribulations of being in a cubicle ala the Office or delve into romance and write the newest Fifty Shades of Grey! Writing is a wonderful way to get rid of stress as well as to get all these ideas floating about in your head finally down on paper. And there's no need for perfection: Nano is there to get things written with a deadline, not fully polished and 100% ready to print.

What? You want to participate? Go straight to Camp Nano's Website and join the fun! All you have to do is create a username, provide an email address, and a password. Then you can set your own word limit goal if 50,000 words seem a bit insurmountable. What I enjoy about Camp Nano is the use of "cabins" where you can be grouped with like-minded writers. You can petition to be cabin-mates with writing friends or jump in and get to know some new people who also like fantasy/romance/mystery novels. And then start writing and competing with your word count while having cabin-conversations.

Need Help?

We've got loads of books on writing just waiting for you in the non-fiction section. Head over to the 808s or check out some of these suggested books:

I challenge you (with a proverbial gauntlet!) to pick up a pen/pencil/quill/iPad/writing utensil of your choice and get writing this April!
