Big Lift Little Libraries
San Mateo County Library’s Big Lift Little Libraries are popping up all over the County! Look for Big Lift Little Libraries in places where children and families could use a great book -- places where families hang out, places where they have to wait in lines, places where reading and books are great activities.
Little Libraries are a “take a book, return a book” way for communities to share books and a love of reading. A Little Library is simply a box of books where anyone can borrow a book (or two) and bring back another to share. The Big Lift is an effort of the Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council focused on increasing countywide reading proficiency of 3rd grade students from 58% to 80% by 2020.
The goals of the Big Lift Little Libraries are:
- to encourage a culture of reading in San Mateo County,
- to increase access to books for children and families at the point of need,
- to involve all of the county in The Big Lift, and
- to help create resident support for The Big Lift initiative.
Through volunteers at Google and Genentech, organized by Hands On Bay Area, Big Lift Little Libraries were constructed and filled with books for children during June 2014. Additional construction projects are planned -- let us know if you’re interested in participating in a build!
