Last Monday night I was able to watch the new expisode of The American Experience on KCSM: Panama Canal: Gateway to the American Century.
A Personal Interest
The story was of particular interest to me. My first Air Force duty station, after finishing weather school, was the Panama Canal Zone. Nothing in the spoken word or video image can recapture the incredibly oppressive heat and humdity of that place. The smell of decay was everywhere.
Talk About a Challenge
What an undertaking to attempt to build a canal across the isthmus! A classic book on the subject is David McCullough's The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914.
Luxurious Exploration
If you would like to see this wonder for yourself (and in considerable comfort), Panama Canal by Cruise Ship should provide a variety of options. To find out the latest news about the Canal and learn more about its history the Panama Canal Authority's website is an excellent place to go.
As you will see, it's still under construction.
