Reading, literacy and the ability to access information are essential to the democratic process. This has been well demonstrated in recent news about the Occupy movement, Arab Spring, the upcoming presidential election, and discussions about civil political discourse.

Democratic state assemblymember, Jerry Hill represents California’s 19th assembly district which includes the cities of Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, Daly City, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, San Bruno, San Mateo, and South San Francisco. His political career started when he served as a San Mateo city councilmember from 1991 to 1998, including a term as mayor in 1994. He then served as a San Mateo County supervisor from 1998 to 2008. He has also served as chair on the San Mateo County Transit District board of directors.

A prolific writer, Will Durst is the best political satirist working today. He transcends party ties, having performed at events honoring former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush as well as acclaimed appearances at mayors’ conventions and governors’ conferences. He is a regular commentator for CNN and NPR; writes a nationally syndicated op-ed column; and performs hundreds of comedy shows every year. Berkeley.

Kevin Vogeltanz first conceived of Dovetail, a group messaging application company, while driving and listening to an NPR story about the temporary Twitter blackout in Egypt after Mubarak shut down the county’s Internet connections. Dovetail allows people to share ideas without fear of government and corporate surveillance or shut down.

 

In addition to these speakers Supervisor Carole Groom of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and Jeanine Asche will also say a few words on behalf of the Literacy Network.
