Orangutan

Orangutan by Colin BroderickWhile I was reading this book I kept looking at the spine in disbelief.

Yup, 921, non-fiction.

But it is  hard to accept that it's all true.

Orangutan is a book about the wave of Irish immigrants who came to the States in the 1980s. It is also a book about the Irish stereotypes, negative as well as positive (heavy drinking, alcoholism, hard-working, talented, educated, and romantic.

Irish Sayings Come To Mind

The luck of the Irish is one, which I've always taken to mean things either work out fantastically well or badly, unbelievably and beyond imagination. There are abundant examples of both in Colin Broderick's life.

The other saying is having the gift of blarney (sweet-talk or exaggeration). And surely Mr. Broderick had some, just a bit, of the blarney, while writing this book.

It's rare for me to read a non-fiction book from cover to cover, but I did with this one. There were times it felt more like a novel and I was pleading with the author to no, don't do that. And then I closed the book. And I decided I just wouldn't be a part of this. I wouldn't keep reading while he made bad choice after bad choice. But then I went back to it.
