Anti-Valentine’s Day!

Cupid with arrow.Ok, it’s that time of year again—the dreaded Valentine’s Day. If you’re one of those people who don’t fall for the annual Hallmark Holiday then I have great news! It seems there’s a growing “Anti-Valentine’s Day” movement that has been going on (and it’s not just for single people!). If you haven’t heard of it, a simple Google search will tell you all you need to know. Basically, it’s for anyone who is made to feel like dog poo on February 14th because you’re not involved in some mushy romance.

How to Celebrate

How can you celebrate Anti-Valentine’s Day? Throw a party! Anti-Valentine’s Day parties are cropping up all over the place. One blog post from a teen librarian detailed some ideas for things to do. They include making mixes of “un-love” songs (and playing them in the background); photocopying covers of romance novels (because vandalizing books is bad!) and drawing devil ears, mustaches, etc. on them; decorating t-shirts with anti-valentine’s slogans like “Back off, Hallmark!” I wish I had thought of this in time to throw an Anti-Valentine’s Party at my library, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have one of your own!

Reading Choices

Or, you could lock yourself in your dark room huddled over books like: Get Over It!: How to Survive Breakups, Back-Stabbing Friends, and Bad Haircuts by Beth Mayall or Love is Hell, a collection of stories by different authors. You could also check out Emily the Strange for some dark humor.

And More…

Find some more happiness by checking out how Valentine’s Day got its start (see librarian Rebecca Alcala’s blog post , as she says—it isn’t pretty!

Author Bio:

Kim Day is a Sr. Library Assistant for the Pacifica Libraries and loves to indulge in her cynical side…much to the chagrin of her other half who probably got her chocolate for Valentine’s Day.
