Adult Manga

Harvey PekarArtist and writer Harvey Pekar died a few days ago. Back before we had the term adult manga we referred to such works as adult comics, not to be confused with those Tillie the Toiler flip comics our uncles used to bring back from Tijuana.

Pekar's series American Splendor was my first exposure to the world of adult manga.

Not Light Thinking

Recently, we've  had a couple of additions to our adult new fiction collection at Half Moon Bay Library. One book is particularly fascinating. Logicomix: An Epic Search For Truth features Betrand Russell, Wittgenstein, logic, mathematics, and the 20th Century search for certainty. It ends with some rousing Classical Greek Drama. And all of this works!

Much Ado About NothingClassic Manga

The next book of ours I want to let you know about is a manga edition of Much Ado About Nothing. Shakespeare takes this new medium in his stride and emerges none the worse. I'll bet these things would have been really popular in Elizabethan London.

Peculiar Journey

So this strange trip has taken me from Pekar and the streets of Cleveland and left me at the Globe Theater. Adult manga can do that to you.

Author Bio:

Joe Toschik is a Half Moon Bay librarian who has lived and worked on the Coast for about 17 years. A former Air Force meteorologist, he is still a weather nut. His hobbies include photography and walking the Coastal Trail and his favorite quote right now is as follows: "Fortunately we're not in control". . . Willie Nelson
