Here at San Mateo County Libraries, we know that motherhood can come in many different forms. Whether it's a biological mom, a stepmom, a grandma, an aunt, a foster mom or even a close family friend—this Mother's Day, we celebrate the amazing women who nurture and guide us.
First established by Anna Jarvis in 1908, Mother's Day became an official national holiday in 1914. Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May in the United States. In other countries, the dates and traditions vary, but it's universally a day to celebrate and honor mothers.
Join Us for Storytime
There are many ways to create fond memories with your child at the library: browsing for books, reading together and engaging in various programs, such as Maker activities and storytimes.
Storytime is more than just books and songs—it's about the connections we make and the moments we share. Children love singing and clapping along to storytime songs, and you can continue to build on their song memorization by engaging in your own storytime at home. Storytime exposes children to rich vocabulary and different sentence structures, promoting language development. It teaches them to focus, and it can help children explore emotions and develop empathy for others. Stories spark children's imaginations and encourage them to think creatively, and it's also a safe way for children to interact with other children and caregivers. We have many different types of storytimes across our branches, on a variety of days and times, offering you many options to choose from. We have six storytimes happening on Mother's Day weekend, we hope to see you there!
Mother's Day Fun
We have a great slate of activities and events happening all throughout Mother's Day weekend. You can jam out with a Ukelele Island Jam or Live Anime Concert, embark on a wellness journey or try something new during Maker Exploration. However you choose to celebrate, we hope you make many happy memories this Mother's Day!
